Below is a list of the official elected and appointed offices in Addison. Elected positions are voted in by the residents of Addison during Town Meeting Day. Appointments are approved by the Selectboard in a majority vote during an open meeting.

Generally, The selectboard shall have the general supervision of the affairs of the town and shall cause to be performed all duties required of towns and town school districts not committed by law to the care of any particular officer. 24 V.S.A. § 872. Listers are elected by the voters and operate independently of the selectboard, with a few exceptions. The overarching responsibility of the lister (and frequently municipal assessors) is assessment equity on the grand list.

When a town votes to place its public burial grounds under the charge of cemetery commissioners, it shall elect separately a board of three or five cemetery commissioners, who shall have the care and management of such burial ground and exercise all the powers, rights, and duties with respect to such care and management and all responsibility on the part of the selectboard shall cease. 18 V.S.A. § 5373

Fire Warden5 year term
Upon approval by the selectboard and acceptance by the appointee, the Commissioner shall appoint a town forest fire warden for a term of five years or until a successor is appointed. 10 V.S.A. § 2641
(a) When a forest fire or fire threatening a forest is discovered in his or her town, the town forest fire warden shall enter upon any premises and take measures for its prompt control, suppression, and extinguishment. The town forest fire warden may call upon any person for assistance. The town forest fire warden may choose to share or delegate command authority to a chief engineer of a responding fire department or, in the chief’s absence, the highest ranking assistant firefighter present during the fire.
(b) A town forest fire warden shall keep a record of his or her acts, the number of fires and causes, the areas burned over, and the character and amount of damages done in the warden’s jurisdiction. Within two weeks after the extinguishment of a fire, the town forest fire warden shall report the fire to the Commissioner, but the making of a report under this subsection shall not be a charge against the town. 10 V.S.A. § 2644

Fence Viewers (2 appointed)1 year term
On request, the fence viewers, or a majority of them, shall examine fences within the town and a division shall be made by them in cases proper for them to determine. If a fence viewer neglects to perform the duties required of him or her, he or she shall forfeit to the party aggrieved $5.00, with costs to be recovered in a civil action on this statute. Either party may appeal from the decision of the fence viewers to a Superior Court if such appeal is claimed within two hours from the rendition of the decision. Such appeal shall be taken as provided by Rule 75 of the Vermont Rules of Civil Procedure. 24 V.S.A. § 3810

Pound Keeper1 year term
The pound keeper shall supply such animal with food and drink while in the pound, and such keeper shall be liable to pay the owner of such animal damages occasioned by neglecting to do so. 20 V.S.A. § 3412

Inspector of Lumber, Shingles & Wood1 year term
At the request of any party interested, an inspector of lumber, shingles, and wood shall examine and classify the quality of lumber and shingles, measure lumber, shingles, and wood, and give certificates thereof. 24 V.S.A. § 1031

Weigher of Coal1 year term
A weigher of coal shall be sworn and shall not be directly or indirectly interested in the sale of coal. Upon request of the seller or purchaser, he or she shall weigh all coal sold in his or her town. 24 V.S.A. § 1032

Tree Warden1 year term
(a) The tree warden shall control all shade trees within the municipality.
(b) The tree warden and the legislative body of the municipality may adopt a shade tree preservation plan.
(d) The tree warden and legislative body of the municipality shall hold a minimum of one public hearing concerning the shade tree preservation plan for the purpose of soliciting public input. The legislative body shall publish the proposed plan 10 days prior to the public hearing.
(e) For the purpose of promoting the public health, safety, welfare, and convenience, a municipality shall have authority to adopt an ordinance that is not inconsistent with this chapter for the administration of the shade tree preservation plan and the regulation of shade trees. 24 V.S.A. § 2502

(a) The assistant clerk shall be sworn and is authorized to perform the recording and filing duties of the town clerk, to issue licenses and certified copies of records, and, in the absence, death, or disability of the town clerk, is further authorized to perform all other duties of the clerk.
(b) If there is a vacancy in the office of town clerk, the authority of the assistant town clerk to perform the duties of the town clerk shall continue until a successor is appointed by the selectboard under section 963 of this title. 24 V.S.A. § 1171
